Passport Information

If you do not have a current passport, you should apply immediately after accepting a position on a trip. It routinely takes between 4 – 6 weeks from the date of application to receive a passport. No visas are required for entry to Malawi, with a valid U.S. passport.

Fees will total about $85 for a routine passport application process. Fees for expedited processing are generally about $60 - $75 additional.

If you already have a passport, double-check your expiration date. Make certain that you have at least four (4) completely blank pages for Passport Control in Johannesburg. If you do not have enough blank pages they will not let you travel into the city to the hotel in which partnership trips overnight. To request additional pages use US Department of State Form: DS-4085.

Passport application forms are available at many post offices or you can visit the state department website. Local West Penn AAA travel service offices can also provide passport applications and assistance with processing.

Currently, passports are valid for ten years and must be valid at times of travel.

Participants should make several copies of their passport page containing their Passport Number, Issuing City and Legal Name: one to leave at home with a family member, one for the trip leaders, and one to carry with them.
